How to Keep Yourself Safe on Longer Nights?  

When it comes to a time of the year where you have longer nights, driving can become difficult and sometimes can cause a lot of recorded accidents compared to days with equal number of hours of night and day.  

 

Longer nights and tiredness from work is a very bad combination for driving. Sometimes people even have problems with their eye sight when it comes to the dark and this can really take a toll on a person’s safety.  

When we experience longer nights in some time of the year, many of us have more time spends driving time in darkness. Even if you have perfect eyesight, the dark can be an added distraction and can add up to your stress when driving coming from a hectic schedule. In these times, a lot of other cars you encounter can have glaring headlights that can be blinding to you as you drive and you might also be doing the same to the drivers that you encountered on the road.  

So, what can you do to keep yourself safe in times of longer nights? 

  1. Make sure that the headlights of your car’s clean and that your pointing it in a direction that’s correct. When you do this, you are not just keeping yourself safe but keeping other driver’s welfare in mind as well. 
  2.  Dimming your dashboard helps you see what’s in front of you better.
  3. Take your eyes off glaring lights from other driver’s headlights.  
  4. Keep your speed at a pace where you have a more visibility on the road. Speeding up your car will not help you see the road and prevent an accident.  
  5. Wear the glasses you have on your dashboard. Make sure that the eyewear you own is anti-reflective to be effective.  
  6. Your windshield should be cleaned. A dirty windshield blinds you more than you expect it.  

 

When it comes to days of the year that have longer nights, we tend to get a bit sleepier because once it is dark your body produces more melatonin. If you are someone who does not have enough time to sleep right, then you are in another problem when it comes to driving drowsy! 

So, what can you do to prevent yourself and your car from crashing in situations like this? 

  1. Get the right amount of sleep! It has been said over and over again to have at least 7 hours of sleep every night. However, if you are someone who does not have the luxury to do so because of too much work on hand, get as much sleep as you think your body can cope. Snooze your alarm 5 minutes more if possible!
  2. Skip the driving if you have been blood shot for more than 16 hours!  
  3. If you are on a long drive and you get sleepy, make sure to get some stops along the way. It is always safe to stop at least every after 2 hours of driving.  
  4. If you are more awake at certain times of the day compared to the normal times other drive, drive in those moments. Listen to your body.  

Avoid the time where traffic is present. Always look for roads that are less hectic thus you are saving yourself from any possible accidents.
